U21s match report Stoppagetime equaliser denies Liverpool
A stoppage-time equaliser denied Liverpool U21s victory as Southampton claimed a 1-1 draw in Premier League 2.

Kieran Morrison’s goal, which rounded off an excellent counter-attack midway through the first half, appeared to have settled Friday night’s contest at Silverlake Stadium in the young Reds’ favour.

However, after Morrison had hit the post from outside the penalty area, Saints levelled in the 95th minute through Max Fry.

Head coach Barry Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com post-match: “It was a really pleasing performance in many aspects. First half, I thought we were excellent in all parts of the game, it was a really strong performance in and out of possession.

“A lot of it for us was about getting ourselves back around where we want to be performance-wise in certain parts of the game and I think we did that.

“We got the goal and then, without bemoaning anything, there was a clear penalty we didn’t get, so you can have a bit of bad luck at times as well.

“Second half, it would be fair to say we couldn’t really get much momentum in the game against a good Southampton team. They put a really strong second-half performance in but we defended ever so well, which is again something I’ve been quite critical of recently and the players have as well – they’ve been critical around knowing we need to defend better.

“We did defend better so then obviously to concede in the 95th minute from a set-play was disappointing. Overall I’m really pleased with the character that we have shown today but we just couldn’t hang on and late goals in the last two games have really hurt us, unfortunately.

“But it’s on to the next one now and if we can couple everything together hopefully we will be OK in the next game.”
