Kyle and Annie’s complex relationship in Sweet Magnolias explained

Sweet Magnolias has returned to Netflix for a second season after a tantalising two-year wait. We recap Kyle and Annie’s relationship and explore what Season 2 has in store for the pair.

Sweet Magnolia’s centres around childhood best friends Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen as they navigate adult life in the town of Serenity. Although the relationship between the leads’ children offers fans just as much drama, love triangles and forbidden romances are rife amongst the teens.

Kyle and Annie’s relationship in Season 1

Season 1 saw Kyle engaged in a love triangle between Annie and his older brother Ty. Throughout the first season, Kyle has a crush on Annie. However, Annie’s attention is focused on Ty, despite the latter having a girlfriend. Kyle’s feelings are not reciprocated, and when Ty and Annie share a drunken kiss he is left heartbroken.

Things come to a head in the final episode of Season 1 when the teens attend their prom. Initially, Annie blows off Kyle to hang out with her friend Simon. Leaving Kyle to hang out with Nellie, the younger sister of Ty’s rival Jackson. When Ty and Jackson get into a fight at the after-prom party, Kyle flees in his brother’s car and gets into a horrific car accident.

Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger, with it unknown who was in the car with Kyle, and whether anyone survived the crash.

What Sweet Magnolias season 2 has in store for Kyle and Annie

Unfortunately for any Kyle and Annie shippers, the pair do not end up together in Season 2. Annie grows closer to Jackson in the second season and eventually they become a couple. The pair continue to date, despite objections from Jackson’s mum, Mary Vaughn.

Meanwhile, having survived the crash, Kyle strikes up a relationship with Jackson’s younger sister Nellie, seemingly over his feelings for Annie. However, Nellie is fearful of her mother’s disapproval and breaks off the relationship with Kyle.

Fan reaction to Annie’s new relationship

While it appears not many fans were rooting for a relationship between Kyle and Annie, there are those who have expressed disappointment that Ty and Annie have not ended up together in the latest chapter of Sweet Magnolias.

This fan wrote: “The Annie/Ty jealousy scenes we’ve been waiting for have ARRIVED”

Another fan wrote: “Cece just straight out said Annie was Ty’s kindergarten crush and then Ty and Helen had that first love conversation where he mentioned the way someone likes their coffee and then proceeded to identify Annie’s order right away yes they are endgame.”

Finally, another shared their upset over the end of Ty and Annie’s ‘will-they-wont-they’ dynamic, posting: “The coffee order, singing scene, longing state from Ty… and then Annie calls him her brother.”

Sweet Magnolias season 2 is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on February 4th, 2022.
